The rights of a mother

by Emma / Posted 06/06/2017 / Updated 26/07/2017

Hi, I would be very grateful for any advise anyone can give me. 4 years ago I left turkey and my Turkish husband with my 2 young children and moved back to the uk. A year later we got divorced. He very rarely contacts them and pays no maintenance. The last time he spoke to them was over a year ago.The children have no interest in him, never mention him and lead a wonderfully happy and content life. He has just contacted me out of the blue to say he will take me to court to get the children back! Is this possible? Do I need to worry?

Yes because he has rights as a father. But no because you have established a life for you and your children in the UK. Go and get legal aid or a lawyer and prepare to prove how long you have been living somewhere, how long the kids have been in school, what their life is like etc - you should call reunite but maybe also contact local police in case he tries to take them. Just start preparing. He hasn´t got much of a chance of anything apart from visitation but the fact he´s thinking about it probably means he´s trying to get something from you - money or something. I´m not an expert I´m just someone who´s read a lot so do call the hotline.
