Legal Aid For Mediation

Legal Aid For Mediation

We are delighted to announce that as from 22nd April 2014, the Legal Aid Agency has agreed to grant automatic non-means non-merit tested legal aid for mediation for all applicant parents in 1980 Hague Convention child abduction cases.

In short this will mean that the applicant parent is now eligible for legal aid to cover the costs of mediation to help resolve these cases. We strongly believe that this new provision will encourage more parents to engage in mediation in these difficult circumstances, resulting in an agreed solution and avoiding lengthy contested court hearings.

We are pleased that following consultation with the Legal Aid Agency, and participation in their working group, that these changes have now been implemented.

Where parents are not covered by legal aid, and do not have the means to cover the cost of mediation, we will continue to mediate pro-bono.
