MPs Guide
On the 18th March 2009 we launched ´International Parental Child Abduction - A Guide for Members of Parliament´.
Parental child abduction can cause enormous distress, and knowing which government department to contact in the first instance can be confusing for both parents and MPs. This new Guide provides MPs with information on which government department to contact and outlines the help that reunite and government departments are able to provide.
The launch was held at the House of Commons where we were joined by Gillian Merron, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office who said "We are very pleased to support reunite in the launch of the MP Guide. It will be a useful resource for MPs who are called on to provide assistance to families affected by this extremely difficult and upsetting issue. I´m delighted to see such close work between the FCO´s Child Abduction Unit, other Government Departments and the NGO community, in tackling International Parental Child Abduction, in order to put first the interests of children." Professor William Duncan, Deputy Secretary General, Hague Secretariat on Private International Law, also addressed guests and a full copy of Professor Duncan´s speech can be downloaded here. We also heard from Bill Olner MP, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Child Abduction (APG) and Dari Taylor MP, Secretary of the APG, on the important work and role that the APG plays in keeping international parental child abduction on the political agenda. Speeches were concluded with words from Denise Carter, Director of reunite, and Anne-Marie Hutchinson, Chair of reunite.
The evening was a great success and we thank everyone who came along and showed their support for reunite and the MPs´ Guide.
